We all would have heard a lot about North Indian wedding ceremonies. Most of these weddings will be grand and noisy, full of dances, songs, and enjoyment. Punjabi wedding stands top in the excitement factor with a lot of factors to enjoy to the core. Alike all other Indian weddings, Punjabi weddings also start with a meeting of the bride and groom’s family. Either the son or the daughter will select the mate in case of love marriages. Most of the weddings are now being arranged in which the parents will choose the mate for their heir.

Punjabi matrimonial sites have seen high demand in recent years despite the rise of social media that can make the children choose their mates. After the selection of the mate, actual wedding ceremonies start many days before the wedding day. Let’s show you some of the Pre-Wedding rituals of Punjabi weddings.

Pre-Wedding Rituals

Roka and Thaka 

Roka and Thaka is the first ceremony of a Punjabi wedding. In this ritual, the family of the bride will go to the groom’s house with a lot of gifts and sweets that is followed by the groom’s family’s visit to the bride’s home. During the ritual, they will decide on the wedding date. It is the beginning of an engagement between the bride and the groom. Both of them will get lots of gifts and sweets.

Chunni Ceremony

It is the official engagement ceremony. The groom’s family will visit the bride’s home with a lot of gifts and sweets. The groom’s mother will provide a red-colored saree, an outfit to the bride who will be wrapped with a dupatta on her head along with a veil covering her face.

In some cases, the family members of the bride will apply Mehendi to her hands. The groom will apply vermilion on the bride’s forehead or the head parting. Then the bride and the groom will exchange rings confirming the start of the marriage. The exchange of rings completes the engagement ceremony

Mehendi Ceremony and Sangeet

Like all other Indian weddings, Punjabi wedding will also have this Mehendi ceremony. In this ritual, either an artist or the family members will apply the beautiful designs of Mehendi on the bride’s hands and feet. In the evening, ladies close to the bride will organize a Sangeet ceremony in which they will sing and dance happily around the bride.

Kangna Bandhana Ceremony

A priest will tie a sacred thread around the wrists of both the bride and the groom. 

Chooda Chandhana 

In this ritual, the maternal uncle of the bride, with his wife, would gift her with 21 bangles. These bangles should get blessed by the elderly male members of the bride’s family with the presence of holy fire.

Haldi Ceremony

It is a symbolic ritual in all Indian weddings. The family members will apply turmeric paste on the groom andthe bride to make them glow and fresh in the morning of the wedding.
