Telugu Marriage – Things You Need to Know About

An Andhra Wedding

Andhra Pradesh is a large South Indian state with a considerable population. A majority of the Telugu population is Hindu. Every Telugu wedding starts with the selection of the mate. We may think that most of the recent marriages will be love marriages due to the freedom given to children and the usage of smartphones. But in fact, most of the weddings are arranged by the parents only. To help these parents select a perfect match for their children, many Telugu marriage bureaubrokers are out there online with matrimonial services for a minimum charge. Parents can even narrow down their search using categories like region, religion, caste, and much more. After the selection of a would-be, actual Telugu wedding rituals start. In this article, let us discuss some of the fascinating rituals of a Telugu wedding.

Nischyathartham

Nischyathartham is the engagement ceremony in Hindu rituals. The members of the two families will gather and decide on the marriage date. They will match the horoscopes of the bride and the groom. If everything is fine, they will announce a sacred day for the wedding. They will consider the opinions and objections of all of the relatives.

Mangala Snanam

It is a ritual of the bridal shower. Both the bride and the groom will apply turmeric paste all over the body and have a bath with holy water mixed with turmeric. It is for the purification of their bodies and makes them glow. It is done as many times as they want.

Ganesh and Gowri Pooja

The next ritual is to pray to god. Gowri pooja happens at the bride’s home. The bride with the married female members of her family will pray to the goddess Gowri. It is to get the blessings of the goddess to lead a good married life. Ganesh Pooja takes place at the wedding venue by the groom and his family. They pray to Lord Ganesh to make every proceeding happen without any struggles.

The couple’s entry and Terasala

The next ritual is the entry of the bride and the groom to the Mandap or the wedding venue. The bride will accompany her family members, and the groom will join with his own family and friends. At the Mandap, the bride’s family will receive the groom with gifts. The bride’s brother will wash the groom’s feet. Until the completion of the ritual, the bride and the groom should not look at each other. Hence, a cloth will be there in between known as Terasala.

Kanyadanam

It is the giving away process of the bride to the hands of the groom. The bride’s father will place her hand on that of the groom, surrendering her to him. The groom will take her hand, promising to take care of her till the end of his life.

JeelaKarra Bellam

In this main event, the family members will place some paste of cumin and jaggery on the hands of the couple. They have to keep this paste on the head of the partner. It means that the couple is officially married to each other. Then the groom will tie a yellow thread named Mangalsutra around the bride’s neck to complete the marriage rituals.
